Although the legendary boat maker Boston Whaler was originally based in Boston when it launched in 1958, the headquarters has since relocated to Edgewater, Florida. Here are some key highlights in the development of this iconic recreational boat company.
Starting in Boston
The roots of the company were started by Harvard graduate Richard Fisher after reading Popular Mechanics Magazine about fiberglass and styrofoam. He used these materials to develop a proprietary closed-cell foam and a process called Unibond Construction. These concepts help increase boat buoyancy, making the boat unsinkable. Fisher collaborated with his inventor friend C. Raymond Hunt, who was awarded a patent in 1963 for the first deep-vee fiberglass hull.
